short short story 3

Freddie the weatherman was sad. His job was to tell people about the weather. Was it going to be sunny, rainy, breezy, snowy or stormy? Was it going to rain cats or was it going to rain dogs? Was lightning going to strike all the cows in the field? It was his job to answer those questions.

But there had been no weather at all for the past month. Nothing. It was not sunny. Not even rainy. The sky had been dreary and blank. Something was wrong and he wasn’t feeling well.

“I’m going to get to the bottom of this.” said Freddie to his dog Buddy.

Once out of the apartment, Buddy began to sniff and run, pulling Freddie along. They ran one kilometer until they reached a deserted park and Buddy started digging vigorously.

Buddy kept digging while Freddie caught his breath. Then Buddy started barking. Freddie ran towards the hole and to his amazement, found a giant rainbow curled up inside, sound asleep!

“GET UP, YOU!!! GET OUT OF THAT HOLE!” shouted Freddie.

The rainbow stretched. “What time is it?” he asked with his eyes still closed.

“Time to get up! Where have you been this whole month?” asked Freddie. “We need you. Come back. The sky’s a disaster. There’s nothing in it!”

“I just needed a nap. Don’t worry. I’m always here. If I’m not in the sky, I’m sleeping.”

Suddenly Freddie felt much better. It was reassuring to know that the rainbow was just below his feet.

“Just because we don’t see it, doesn’t mean it isn’t there, right Buddy?”
